Travel tips - know before you go on holiday to Tenerife

Tenerife is built on a mountain and as such the terrain is hilly even around the resorts making some of them unsuitable for people who are infirm, in wheelchairs or those with young children or babies in pushchairs.  The holiday brochure may tell you that the hotel is wheelchair friendly but it probably won’t tell you that its half way up the mountain and a hire car is recommended.

Some resorts are remote in comparison to the main resorts and the only way in or out of them is by car, bus or taxi.  Unfortunately not all travel agents will tell you this.  For example Playa Paraiso and Callao Salvaje may be described as being in Costa Adeje, sadly although this may be true in the case of Callao Salvaje, these two resorts are off the beaten track and the only way to get out and about is by car, taxi or bus.  If you don’t know before you go and haven’t budgeted for it you may find you are confined to your hotel once you have explored the local vicinity.

Golf del Sur is another resort that is quite remote and would require a hire car or use of buses and taxis if you wanted to venture out.  The other downside to this resort is that there is only one road in and out of the resort which becomes congested at certain times of the day.  Noise from aircraft can also be a problem as it is very close to the airport. Golf del Sur and it's neighbouring town of Costa del Silencio are generally windy resorts.

The most popular resorts in Tenerife are Las Americas, Los Cristianos, Torviscas, Fanabe, Del Duque, Puerto Colon and Los Gigantes. Costa Adeje is the name given to the Municipality in the south which takes in some of the resorts mentioned here.

When you arrive in Tenerife you will need to get from the airport to your hotel or apartment. It only takes about 20-25 minutes to get to the Costa Adeje region by taxi, and around 50 minutes to get to Los Gigantes. A taxi transfer wont cost much for up to 4 people and luggage. If there are more than 4 passengers, you will need to take additional taxis or hire one of the people carrier type taxis. There is a regular bus service to and from the airport which costs just a few euros each, which is very good value.
